Dean also works as a fiction editor, starting at Pulphouse Publishing, then at VB Tech Journal, then Pocket Books. With WMG Publishing, he edits two acclaimed anthology series: Fiction River, for which he acts as series editor with Kristine Kathryn Rusch, and the Hugo Award-winning Pulphouse Fiction Magazine, as well as a monthly magazine featuring all his own work called Smith's Monthly. And in 2022, he was named editor of Writers of the Future.
